IGREJA DA GRAÇA
Ancient church of Portuguese Baroque religious art with surprising effects of sculptures and trompe l'oeil.
Take a look at one of the town's oldest churches, dating back to 1271. It was dedicated to a statue of the Virgin Mary miraculously fished out of the sea off Cascais (Portugal, land of miracles...). Before our very eyes is a condensation of Portuguese Baroque religious art, with gilded woodwork, beautiful azulejos dating from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, surprising sculptural effects and trompe-l'œil. Like the convent, however, it was damaged in the 1755 earthquake, and rebuilt.
