MUSEU DO ORIENTE
Museum of the Orient offering a guided tour to discover an exhibition superbly highlighted with splendid pieces.
Housed in a former 1939 refrigerated shed, representative of the architecture of the Estado Novo, this museum of the Orient, inaugurated in 2008, then modernised and refurbished, is structured around two collections. Here, by "East", we essentially mean "Asia", the territory explored by the great Portuguese navigators. The collection alludes to the Portuguese presence in Asia, alongside the Kwok On collection (formerly in Hong Kong) concerning the performing arts from popular sources and the great mythologies and religions of all Asia. These collections are complemented by highly relevant temporary exhibitions on themes and works by artists who create a link between Asia and the West, past and present. The Portuguese were the first European people to land in the farthest eastern ports... Thus two evocations of the founding collections of Luís Camões and Fernão Mendes Pinto on the perception of Portuguese discoveries at the time open the doors to a superbly presented exhibition, with muted lighting and black background showcases. In front of innumerable splendid pieces, you will be able to see for example the influence of Asian art on Western art, both for religious works and for furniture, for example. Porcelains, ceramics, textiles or other paintings of different oriental origins each have their own history and peculiarity, so if you are not familiar with Asian art, a guided tour is more than recommended.
