MILITAR MUSEUM
Military museum with a beautiful collection of pistols and rows of real cannons in a large vaulted room.
Even if your convictions are against it, this museum has a certain interest, because it is not only about weapons, but also about the 18th century arsenal. Through the door (where ray swords form a circle), you will enter a room where 16th century cannons rest. This space is dedicated to Vasco de Gama and is painted with allegories such as Neptune with his bare buttocks overpowering the sea with, at his side, the illustrious navigator... On the first floor, for the pleasure of the eyes, armour, marble and fake marble, painted ceilings and golden sculptures by Francisco Antonio (18th century), mythological and warrior allegories... And then, a beautiful collection of pistols: from 17th century models to the most recent ones celebrated in novels and film noir (Parabellum, Smith & Wesson, Browning...). Two rooms are dedicated to the evolution of weapons (knives and firearms) in Portugal from the 17th to the 19th century. You think that the visit is coming to an end, but it is not! A secret door is opened by the museum's guard to discover a room full of admirable models: cannons, reconstitution of manufacturing workshops, etc. Then follows a didactic room where, with photos to support, we explain to you with pedagogy the Portuguese intervention in Angola (without comments!). Finally, a large vaulted room houses rows of cannons, this time real cannons, covering even the German weapons used during the Second World War (in which Portugal did not participate).
