Museum-school of decorative arts with a collection of traditional arts, having 18 workshops of conservation and restoration.
Housed in the elegant seventeenth-century Palácio Azurara in the old Alfama district, this museum of decorative arts presents the decor of a Lisbon aristocrat's house of the time. This palace was bought by Ricardo Espírito Santo to house part of his private collection. In 1953, the banker and collector donated the Azurara Palace and part of his private collection to the Portuguese state. This is how the homonymous foundation was born, which is both a museum and a school with 18 conservation and restoration workshops, which play a key role in disseminating and maintaining the intangible heritage of Portuguese craftsmanship. After being restored by the architect Raul Lino, this palace offers us a superb collection of traditional arts, mainly from the 17th and 18th centuries. The tour is articulated in the different rooms of the palace recreating the intimacy of a residence of that time: the bedrooms, the dining room, the offices, the showcase room... During the walk, the visitor will be able to admire magnificent furniture with Asian and African influences. One will be able to note the work of marquetry and painting on wood. Portuguese furniture, azulejos, earthenware, silverware, textiles, silverware, paintings and porcelain from the 16th to the 19th century, a summary of the history of decoration and furnishing in Portugal presented on site. You won't miss the oriental-influenced embroidery and beautiful tapestries of Arraiolos.
