BMAD - BERARDO MUSEU ART DECO
Museum combining Art Deco and Art Nouveau, with interior garden and terrace, offering a tasting session at the end of an exhibition tour.
This new museum opened in April 2021. It is located in the summer residence of the Marquis of Abrantes, which has been restored for the occasion. As its name suggests, the museum is dedicated to the period of the 1920s and 1930s, mixing Art Deco and Art Nouveau. Two experts of this period are in charge of the selection and installation of the pieces, including the Frenchman Emmanuel Bréon, former director of the Musée des Années Trente in Paris. Each room of the palace shows us period furniture, dishes, paintings, decorative objects... Works by Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann, Alfred Porteneuve, Jean-Michel Frank, Jacques Adnet, René Lalique and Jules Leleu are presented. You can also see the work of the sculptor Ernesto Canto da Maya and the visual artist Eloy de Jesus Pereira. Between each of the rooms, long corridors displaying illustrations, motifs used at that time, panels of azulejos or photos that immerse us in the atmosphere. Throughout the visit, you can admire the palace with its ceiling moldings and other decorative details. Finally, the museum is coupled with a room for events and a store offering a selection of Portuguese wines. Indeed, the Berardo Foundation also owns a vineyard: Bacalhôa Vinhos. A wine tasting is offered at the end of the exhibition. You can then enjoy the secret interior garden and its pretty terrace with Art Deco touches, of course.
