ESTUFA FRIA
Garden with wonderful greenhouses in a surreal atmosphere, organizing events.
The Estufa Fria (the "cold greenhouse") is a green haven in the heart of the city. It houses three marvellous greenhouses (cold, warm and soft) designed in 1910 and built into the hillside of Eduardo VII Park. Loved by locals but little-known by tourists, Estufa Fria is nonetheless sensational. Palm trees, cascades of philodendrons, ficus, cacti and tropical plants crowd around small ponds, streams, artificial grottoes, sculptures and waterfalls that can be discovered along the paths, creating a wild and romantic atmosphere. Under the subdued light, it's a peaceful tropical labyrinth that reveals itself to be very mysterious, almost surreal. It's a sure bet to please cinephiles and botanists alike. Inside, you'll find a small world of big cats, cockerels and chickens. It's a lovely opportunity to take a meditative walk away from the noise of the city. It's very relaxing. From the top of the paths, it's almost as if you're looking down on a primeval forest. The more airy palm grove offers benches perfect for daydreaming and spending a few hours. To think that all this dates back only a century... Plants that grow so fast say a lot about the Lisbon climate. The winter garden has always been a venue for events (concerts, exhibitions, theater), including an experimental music festival (Lisboa Soa) not to be missed if you're in the area at the time (usually September). A sensory journey guaranteed.
