TAPADA DAS NECESSIDADES
An enchanting oasis with a picnic area, an impressive cactus garden and 3 lakes surrounded by exotic plants.
Little known and little frequented because of its relative isolation (and dilapidation?), overlooking the Tagus, this tapada, i. e. a closed hunting reserve, is an enchanting oasis although, alas, it is abandoned. For a long time it was not open to the public and it is perhaps for this reason that it is ignored. The small square where a fountain once whispered sets the tone! Follow in the footsteps of the royal owners who have so many times visited their gardens and discover vast terraced areas crowned by a mill, with a forgotten greenhouse, tropical areas, a boxwood garden, and the former monks' vegetable garden. The roads are poorly maintained, fountains no longer gush, on the heights of the pavilions have been destroyed, but despite everything, this green space of Lisbon retains its outdated charm. You will find a beautiful picnic area and a rather impressive cactus garden, as well as three lakes surrounded by exotic plants. In the centre, the Palácio Real das Necessidades (Largo do Rilvas), built in 1742, a former monastery and royal palace with a pink candy façade, abandoned for 40 years, now houses the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is now classified as a National Monument. You will also have a thought for Queen Amelie, our compatriot, in front of her painting pavilion. From the top of the garden, a wonderful view of Alcântara. It is therefore a good option for an outdoor day dedicated to rest to take a break during the visits.
