During the earthquake, the main occupant of this square, the Royal Hospital of All Saints, was consumed in a fire with several hundred of his patients. It was then used as a market place with covered markets until the 1950s. Today, it welcomes all day long young skateboarders, gourmet tourists, lottery ticket sellers, or inhabitants of the outskirts who have come to the city. There are regularly fairs that are set up in its centre, supervised by the bronze equestrian statue of Dom João I.
