CONVENTO DOS CAPUCHOS (CONVENT OF CAPUCHINS)
Tiny amazing convent of the seventeenth century, in front of the park of Monserrate, hosting 12 Capuchin monks at that time.
Known as the Capuchin Convent, this tiny Franciscan monastery dating from 1560 is located in the Sintra mountains. To represent the spiritual ideal of poverty advocated by the order, the facilities are rudimentary and the austere cells are carved out of the rock. Ceilings average 1.60 m in height... a humbling experience! The convent includes a small, sober chapel and a minimalist cloister surrounded by vegetation. It was finally abandoned in 1834.
