PARK AND PALACE OF MONSERRAT
Large English park and castle in romantic style, with fountains and lawns under the protective shade of vegetation.
Need some peace and quiet after the Sunday crowds at the Palacio da Pena? Then head to the heart of Monserrate, a magnificent English-style botanical park dominated by a strange Orientalist-style castle. The palace was originally a hermitage in the 16th century. In 1856, Sir Francis Cook, a wealthy British merchant, hired architect James Knowles to restore the building, which was completed in 1866. Sir Francis Cook, a passionate botanist, landscaped the grounds with exotic plants from all over the world. A change of scenery is guaranteed! As soon as you enter, you're catapulted into a dense jungle that leads you to the ruins of a chapel overgrown with vegetation. Organized into different sections, the garden invites you to discover flora from near and far. Stroll through the Mexican Garden amidst aloes and cacti, the Japanese Garden with its invasive bamboos, or the superb rose garden with its bewitching fragrances. After this bath in nature, visit the palace, worthy of tales from the Arabian Nights. Inside, the rooms are empty, but the ornaments, carved wooden doors, tiles, vaults and interior fountains are breathtaking. A true architectural gem! You'd think you were in an Indian palace. The little plus? The site is much less frequented by tourists, who prefer Sintra's other more popular monuments.
