FORTALEZA DE SÃO FILIPE
Castle, classified as a national monument and transformed into a pousada, housing a chapel with a collection of tiles from the eighteenth century.
Built in 1590 by Filipe I to defend Setúbal, this castle, known as Fort São Filipe, was converted into a pousada in the 1960s. It has been listed as a national monument since 1933. Its role was, of course, to defend this part of the coastline. Over the centuries, its role changed from military fortress to governor's residence, pousada and tourist attraction. The chapel houses a fine collection of 18th-century azulejos depicting the life of São Filipe. From the ramparts, you have a beautiful view of the peninsula.
