PARQUE NATURAL DA ARRÁBIDA
Natural park protected from real estate developers offering a delightful walk along the sea and its beaches.
Lisbon's surroundings are full of surprises, and the Serra da Arrábida is one of them. This magnificent nature reserve will appeal to hikers and biodiversity lovers alike. Created in 1976, the park covers some 10,800 hectares, encompassing mountains, spectacular beaches, Mediterranean forests and unique biodiversity. Wild olive trees, cypresses, myrtles and arbutus populate this limestone "mountain" that plunges steeply into turquoise waters. This mountain range offers impressive panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. The park covers more than 10,000 ha of land and 5,700 ha of sea. Leaning against the cliffs and facing the sea, stop off at Praia do Portinho da Arrábida, a picturesque bay lined with fine sand and inhabited at most by a dozen or so houses, a few rowboats and beach restaurants. Its waters are so clear that one wonders if this is in fact the Atlantic Ocean.
On the way back, we can't fail to admire the Arrábida conventual complex, nestled into the hillside (founded in 1542 by the Franciscans) and dotted with 17th-century sentry boxes
We continue this delightful stroll (but beware! many areas are off-limits) by skirting the sea and its tiny beaches, which sometimes boast one or two restaurants: Praia de Galapos or Praia da Figueirinha (a beautiful, quiet beach protected from the wind).
