KANDT HOUSE MUSEUM
This museum, under the responsibility of the National Museums Institute of Rwanda, formerly known as the Natural History Museum (NHM), was renovated and renamed Kandt House Museum in December 2017. It is housed in the beautiful and august home of Richard Kandt, a German doctor and researcher, who is none other than the founder of Kigali in 1907. He arrived in Rwanda in 1898 as an explorer and discovered the sources of the Nile. He then settled on the shores of Lake Kivu, from where he continued his exploration. In 1904, he successfully published his book Caput Nili - a sentimental journey to the sources of the Nile. Returning to Rwanda in 1905, Kandt was considered the best connoisseur of the country, and so he was appointed first resident in 1907. Kigali became the capital at independence in 1962. Until then, the capital was located in Nyanza, the monarchical capital. The museum presents the life of the Rwandan people in all its aspects (social, economic and political) before the colonial period. It then traces the life and work of Richard Kandt in Rwanda, the colonial past under German rule and the history of the capital. The museum also describes the geological context of Rwanda, the flora and fauna of the Rwandan natural parks, and for enthusiasts it exhibits a collection of snakes ... alive. At the back, a magnificent terrace offers a breathtaking view of the valleys north of Kigali (on the Kigali, Jali and Shyorongi mountains) as well as on the very dense crossroads of Nyabagogo.
