SOURCE OF THE NILE - GISOVU
Nestled in the northernmost part of Nyungwe National Park, the rows of tea bushes at Gisovu Estate contrast with the dense, wild character of the voicin rainforest. Gisovu is both a tea estate and a starting point to reach what is described as the most remote source of the Nile, as discovered in 2006 by three explorers, two British and one New Zealander. At 2,428 meters above sea level, this small source of the Rukarara River extends the Nile by some 100 km, from 6,611 to 6,719 km. The one and a half hour hike from the village of Gisovu follows a well-marked trail through this northern part of the beautiful Nyungwe Forest to the bottom of the forest where the spring and a bench are located. Nothing spectacular, but the emotion of being there! We can leave by another path that leads directly to the tea estate. The estate can also be visited by the day (✆ +250 784 575 503, Luxmitea.com/Estates/Gisovu - Silverback Tea Company). The tour usually ends with a tea tasting ceremony, one of the best in the world according to connoisseurs. The estate alone produces 4,400 tons of tea per year. A guest house is available for a night or two (by reservation only). Those who want to venture out on a mountain bike, the others can simply soak up the serenity of the place and the beauty of the landscape, green and hilly tea fields as far as the eye can see. Simply enchanting.
