SANTISSIMO MILAGRE CHURCH
Church that houses the Santissimo Milagre, a relic that comes from a legend about the host that began to bleed and become luminous.
This old and progressively baroque church has an important relic: the Santíssimo Milagre. According to the legend, in the 13th century in Santarém there lived a woman who knew that her husband was cheating on her. To put an end to this humiliation, she called a witch. The witch asked her to go to the church to steal a consecrated host, with which she would make a love potion that was supposed to bring back her husband. The deceived wife did as she was told and wrapped the host in linen. Here the miracle occurred: like the body of Christ, the host suddenly began to bleed and emit dazzling rays of light, forcing the attention of the husband, to whom his wife confessed the truth. Both spent the night in prayer and went to the priest the next day to tell him the whole story. The news spread and the inhabitants began to flock to see the miracle. The host was enclosed in a wax container, which was later placed in the golden monstrance that can be seen today in the church of Santo Estevão, where the host had been stolen. History does not say whether the fickle husband returned to wiser resolutions..
Other church: Igreja do Seminario (Praça Sá de Bandiera. Open Monday to Friday from 10am to 1pm and from 2pm to 6pm, weekends from 10am to 12pm). This church of the former Jesuit monastery was proclaimed a cathedral in 1975. Built in the 17th century, it has a beautiful baroque façade with mannerist tones.
