Pine forest of Leiria, a huge forest leading to sandy beaches and cliffs with peaceful little coves.
The pine forest of Leiria was planted in the 12th century, at the instigation of Afonso Henriques and Denis I, in order to stop the advance of the sands along the coast. In the 14th century, it served the maritime and commercial interests of the kingdom by feeding the construction of the great ships that left during the Great Discoveries. With its intoxicatingly fragrant footpaths, this immense forest leads to beaches where the cliffs draw small coves. The fires of 2017 ravaged it, 22 million trees are being replanted.
