Salgados beach (south) is a quiet and uncrowded area, suitable for fishing or surfing. Closer to the city, the Praia Nova and the Praia de Nazaré are beautiful, but can be overcrowded in season. When there is a big swell, beware of the waves: it is better to stay away from the 4-meter high rollers that explode a few meters from the shore and that, while flowing back, take everything away! To the north of the Sítio promontory, with its Forno da Orca cave, the Praia Norte is a huge sandbank surrounded by dunes and age-old pines.
