SANTA MARIA CHURCH
Church with baroque azulejo walls, the Renaissance tomb of João de Noronha and Renaissance ceilings.
This 12th century church, rebuilt in the 16th century, is in the Renaissance style. It was built on the site of a Visigoth temple, itself later transformed into a mosque. The church of Santa Maria is worth visiting for the harmonious richness of its decoration: baroque azulejo walls from 1700 decorated with paintings (with the magnificent altarpiece of Saint Catherine painted by Josepha d'Obidos), Renaissance tomb of João de Noronha, polychrome Renaissance ceilings. A small marvel not to be missed during your stay in this city.
