MUSEU DO CARAMULO-MUSEU DE ARTE E DO AUTOMÓVEL
Art museum with works by Picasso, car museum with a collection of old cars and motorcycles.
Two museums in one! An art museum and one dedicated to the automobile.
An impressive art collection. It was, for example, for more than 50 years, the only museum in Portugal to exhibit works by Picasso. The collection on display is that of the Fundação Abel de Lacerda, an obsessive Portuguese collector who accumulated an impressive heritage during his lifetime. In addition to Picasso's works, there are works by Dali, Miró, Chagall, Rodin, Dufy and Léger and many others: paintings, a watercolour by Dali, numerous ceramics and sculptures, all of exceptional quality. Some uncertain lighting and the presence of reflections on certain frames do not always highlight the works as they deserve. The museum also has several other rooms dedicated to Portuguese sacred art of the 17th and 18th centuries and one to sacred art from around the world (India, China, Japan, etc.).
A private collection of 70 cars and 30 old and classic motorcycles. This part of the museum is housed in the rooms of a 12th century cloister that has been rebuilt stone by stone and presents some rare cars, all in perfect working order: the oldest is a Benz from 1886 and the most recent is a Ferrari 456 from 1998. There is also the Rolls-Royce used by Elizabeth II and Pope John Paul II during their visits to Portugal. One room is dedicated to two collections: one of small cars and another of toy soldiers.
