Serra de Estrela Natural Park, with lush vegetation and marked hiking trails, including three major routes.
Its 101,060 ha, populated by about 43,000 inhabitants, have 357 km of marked footpaths. It is one of the areas in Portugal where it rains the most. As a result, there is a lush vegetation to discover even though 10,000 hectares of vegetation were ravaged by fires in the summer of 2022. Several possible routes. Nice walks from Covilhã to Manteigas by taking the N339 towards Torre (immense magnificent panorama, waterfalls). Then the N338 towards Manteigas leads to the famous glacial valley of Zêzere. From Manteigas, you can also go to Poço do Inferno (Hell's Well), a wooded gorge with a beautiful waterfall. The three main routes of the Serra :
From Covilhã to Seia (about 2 hours): Covilhã, Penhas de Saúde, Torre, Sabugueiro, Seia. Crossing the park for 50 km, it presents a great variety of landscapes (including the summit of Torre).
From Gouveia to Covilhã by Manteigas, following the eastern side of the Serra for a distance of 70 km (about 3 hours): Gouveia, Manteigas, Poço do Inferno, glacial valley of Zêzere, Covilhã.
Finally, from Covilhã to Seia by Unhais da Serra. It follows the western side of the Serra for 80 km (about 2 hours).
For hikers, the most beautiful footpaths start from Manteigas: for Vale de Zêzere (one of the largest glacial valleys in Europe covered with broom), for the Poço do Inferno waterfalls and its gorges along the river, for Penhas Douradas and even for Linhares (further north).
