CASTELO DE BELMONTE
Medieval castle overlooking the Zêzere with a Manueline window on the outer wall of the Palace with the coat of arms of the Cabral family.
The medieval castle that dominates the Zêzere River had its heyday in the 12th and 13th centuries when it was enlarged to protect the town and its main tower was built. Belmonte lost its strategic position and, during the crisis that the village went through in the 14th century, part of its walls collapsed. In the 15th century, Afonso V cedes the castle to Fernando Cabral, father of Pedro Alvares Cabral, who transforms this military castle into a manor house. Beautiful Manueline window on the outer wall of the Palace, which bears the coat of arms of the Cabral family.
