SÃO MIGUEL CATHEDRAL
Cathedral with a mixture of Renaissance and Baroque styles, altarpieces of the seventeenth century, paintings of the time, a beautiful organ.
Rebuilt several times from the 18th century up to its current edifice, São Miguel Cathedral today represents an interesting blend of styles, from Renaissance to Baroque. As you take a tour, try to discern the different eras that mark its evolution. The cathedral served as a bishopric until 1881. Ask at the tourist office about visiting it. Inside, you'll find 17th-century altarpieces and paintings from the same period. It also houses a superb organ.
