BENOUVILLE CASTLE
This grand château is one of the few major examples of the work of neoclassical architect Claude-Nicolas Ledoux.
This large castle built between 1769 and 1780, nestled in the middle of a park on the banks of the Orne, near Pegasus-Bridge, is one of the rare major testimonies of the work of Claude-Nicolas Ledoux, architect of neoclassical art and Enlightenment visionary. Restored in the mid-1980s, it was, from 1929 to 1985, a departmental maternity ward run by nuns. This maternal mother-child care centre saw the birth of more than 11,000 children, including the singer Gérard Lenorman. Annie Girardot's mother was also a midwife. Owned by the Conseil Général du Calvados, it has housed the offices of the Regional Accounting Chamber and, much more fortunately, since 2013, has hosted the European Institute of Gardens and Landscapes, a dedicated place, unique in France. Many conferences and visits throughout the year.
