THE CHURCH OF SAINT-ETIENNE-LE-VIEUX
Saint-Étienne-le-Vieux church, built in the 10th century, which today exudes a delightfully mysterious charm in Caen.
You have to suffer to be beautiful, says the adage. And the least we can say is that this church has suffered, but it actually draws its painful history from its current beauty. Probably built in the 13th century, it was destroyed for the first time in the 15th century before being rebuilt. Then, the same thing happened again in the 19th century. Different martyrs to credit the English, who twice made the headquarters of the city. The building was then calm before being ruined again in 1944, but by the Germans this time. Despite all this, it retained its beautiful octagonal lantern tower of the 13th century, as well as an enigmatic statue, which would represent Emperor Constantine. From these different mutilations, the church now radiates a mysterious charm.
