The abbey was founded around 1060 by Mathilde, Duchess of Normandy and wife of William the Conqueror. Its abbey church, a masterpiece of Romanesque art, houses the tomb of its illustrious founder. The convent, rebuilt in the 18th century and restored in 1986, now houses the headquarters of the Normandy Region.
