WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR ART VILLAGE
A veritable open-air museum, just a few metres from Les Halles, where you can meet antique dealers and craftsmen.
Located 200 metres from the covered markets and the church, the Village d’Art Guillaume-le-Conquérant is open to the public free of charge all year round. In season, you can meet artists, antique dealers and craftsmen. Former post house located between Rouen and Caen by Chemin de la Grève, the complex included external galleries to reach the rooms, stables and outbuildings. There remain from this time, some parts of buildings easily identifiable in the Louis XIV courtyard. At the end of the 19th century, with the sea bathing trend, a rich clientele was established and the inn experienced a period of splendour thanks to an exceptionally talented innkeeper, Mr Le Rémois, who ensured its address a wide reputation and received many artistic, literary or political celebrities. A great art lover, he transformed the inn and decorated the Norman buildings with half-timbering and woodcarvings. On the roofs, he set finials. As a collector, he decorated the three courtyards with authentic 17th and 18th-century stone sculptures, sometimes from former churches or manor houses in the region. He also celebrated the memory of William the Conqueror. The pediment of the porch is still engraved: "Hostellerie Guillaume Le Conquérant". A fresco partially reproducing the Tapisserie de Bayeux was set in the "Salle du Départ" which now houses the tourist office. An open-air museum that is timeless.
