FAIRMONT ROYAL YORK
The ultimate in castle-hotel style. When it opened in 1929, it was also the first skyscraper in Toronto.
A superb work by architects Ross and Macdonald, in association with Sproatt and Rolph, and built in the style of Canadian Pacific Castles Hotels, the Royal York was the ultimate when it opened in 1929. At 28 stories and 122 metres high, it was Toronto's first skyscraper and the tallest tower in the British Empire before losing its title to the Canadian Bank of Commerce, which was built a year later. A true temple of luxury, completely renovated in recent years, it is well worth a visit.
