SALT GRINDERS
Formerly huge salt granaries dating back to the century, they now host numerous cultural events.
Originally three in number (the last burned down in 1892), the former granaries are vast 17th-century stone buildings. They were built by the Ferme des Gabelles, under the authority of Colbert, to store the salt (up to a colossal 10,000 tons!) needed for cod fishing, which came from La Rochelle. Like the church of Sainte-Catherine, their oak frames are reminiscent of a ship's hull. Classified as a historic monument in 1916, they now host a wide range of cultural events.
