SALT GRINDERS
salt granaries, used to store salt for cod fishing vessels, now host events.
Originally three in number (the last burnt down in 1892), the granaries are vast stone buildings dating back to the 17th century. Located not far from the Hôtel de Ville, they were built by the Ferme des Gabelles, under the authority of Colbert, to store the salt (up to 10,000 tons) needed for the cod fishing fleet. Like the church of Sainte-Catherine, their oak frames are reminiscent of a ship’s hull. Listed as a historic monument in 1916, they now host numerous cultural events.
