Museum presenting a collection of pre-Impressionist and contemporary paintings by artists who spent time in Honfleur.

A visit to this museum is organised around several themes, the main one being, of course, Eugène Boudin himself and the painters of the 19th century. The paintings, moving from the dark romanticism of Jean-Baptiste Isabey to the luminous clarity of Claude Monet, evoke the atmosphere of meetings at the Saint-Siméon inn, not far from Honfleur, where artists came to find the light of the Normandy skies, water, and gardens. The works of Eugène Boudin, born in Honfleur in 1824, are surrounded by those of painters and friends: Monet, Dubourg, Courbet, Jongkind... to name but a few. Two areas present Boudin’s 92 works (paintings and drawings), currently housed here. One features pastels, skies, views of Honfleur and scenes from the Auberge Saint-Siméon. In the second, oil paintings, beaches, portraits, landscapes, and seascapes. Other rooms offer a journey through more contemporary painting, devoted to 20th-century artists who lived or worked in Honfleur and Normandy, such as Vallotton, Marais, Dufy, Marquet, Cappiello and the painters of the Rouen School. Admire the ethnographic collection of costumes, accessories, lace and furniture and, a few yards away, the Sainte-Catherine bell tower, an annex of the museum (closed from November to mid-April), where religious works (sculptures, souvenirs from the Charités and the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce chapel) are on display. The chapel is used for temporary exhibitions.
