Visit the old town and discover the Alter Markt, the Brandenburg Gate, the Dutch Quarter and the Hans-Otto-Theater.
Potsdam's city center was tragically destroyed during World War II, but it has retained a charming atmosphere that is perfect for strolling around.
The historic heart of the city is located around theAlter Markt. It is on this Old Market that you will find the St. Nicholas Church with its impressive dome and the castle which, since its reconstruction, serves as the Landtag (parliament) of Brandenburg. Also on the square, the Palazzo Barberini has established itself as the art museum of Potsdam since its opening. The rest of the square awaits reconstruction.
Potsdam also has its own Brandenburg Gate on Luisenplatz, which looks like a small triumphal arch. Around it is a pleasant pedestrian area. The Brandenburger Straße is particularly lively and commercial.
The Dutch Quarter, the Holländisches Viertel, was founded by Frederick William I to house Dutch craftsmen working on the city's major construction sites. It is located between Gutenbergstraße, Friedrich-Ebert-Straße, Hebbelstraße and Kurfürstenstraße. At that time, about 100 red brick buildings were built here. In the 1990s it was a squatter's quarter, but now it is a tourist paradise, a place for shopping and "Kaffee und Kuchen". It is one of the most amazing areas of the city, with an Amsterdam feel.
A little further on, the Hans-Otto-Theater on the banks of the Havel surprises and seduces with its contemporary curved forms and glass facades.
