PUPUTAN SQUARE
A must-see monument in Denpasar, commemorating Badung's famous puputan in 1966.
The monument commemorates the puputan which means 'fight to the end'. It is the famous puputan of Badung in 1906, when the Dutch attacked the rajahs of Badung. The rajahs, faced with the Dutch armed with guns and cannons, put on their white clothes, kriss and gold jewellery and committed suicide in front of the Dutch troops rather than fight. The soldiers rushed to the dying men to steal their jewellery. The monument represents a man, a woman and two children brandishing kriss in front of Dutch rifles.
