PURA JAGATNATHA
Hindu temple, the capital's most important, built for the supreme god Sang HyangWidhi and featuring several sculptures.
The temple of Jagatnatha was built in 1953 for the supreme god Sang Hyang Widhi which affirms the attachment to the monotheism of Hinduism. Indeed, to meet the first of the 5 principles of Pancasila, it was necessary for Hinduism to renounce the Indian pantheon and Trimurti. The sanctuary of Sang Hyang Widhi, built in coral, rests on the turtle which represents the world and the naga (snakes) which watch over it. All around, many sculptures tell the episodes of the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Its architecture is detailed and notice boards detail its specificities. In this temple, the most important of the capital, apart from the daily ritual offerings of the faithful, the ceremonies are going well, especially at the time of the full moon when all the young people go there in pilgrimage. Dressed in their traditional costumes, the Balinese make all sorts of offerings at the many altars in the temple. At nightfall, the religious festival is at its peak, and with a little luck, you can see a traditional leather puppet show that sometimes takes place in front of the temple entrance on a small stage set up for the event. Don't forget to wear your sarong and the belt that goes with it for your visit (the temple staff can rent you this if you don't have one).
If you are hungry, there are many food vendors in a large area around the temple.
