SACRED MONKEY FOREST
A pleasant forest, home to macaques, Rangda witch sculptures and a temple, located near the town center.
If there's one place in and around Ubud that's not to be missed and that we'd recommend, it's certainly this one, which will delight young and old alike! The forest, which belongs to the village of Padantegal, looks more like a wood eaten away by urbanization, although it still boasts some very old banyans whose thick lianas touch the ground, and is a cool enclave just two minutes from downtown Ubud. Numerous sculptures of Rangda witches can be seen at the entrance to the sanctuary, some of them depicting demons devouring children. This temple, Pura Dalem Agung, is thus dedicated to evil spirits, and you can't enter it, only catch a glimpse of it as you stroll through the forest. This same forest is home to an abundant community of grey macaques. Pack your glasses, camera, cell phone and anything else that sticks out in your bag. Don't bring plastic bags or food, or you'll be robbed by the locals. Beware, they can be a bit aggressive, so don't try to touch them or look them straight in the eye. And don't feed them either! You can, however, take a selfie with them in the company of a "Monkey Master". In this case, expect to pay around 50,000 rp for the service. The short walk through the woods allows you to admire the magnificent Hindu stone sculptures scattered around, recounting the site's past grandeur.
