PURA KEBO EDAN
Temple with a monumental statue of Bhairava and archaeological artifacts to discover the evolution of Hinduism.
One of the many temples of the village. This one is famous for its large statue of a giant, more than 3.60 m high representing Bhairava. This statue is surrounded by representations of raksasa (these are demons in Hindu mythology: either ancient fallen gods or "great sinners"). All the statues wear necklaces of human skulls, which is said to be typical of the Singhasari (Java) style. This statue is estimated to date from the 13th century. According to Urs Ramseyer, the temple is a variant of the magical temples of Singosari (Java). King Kartanegara is said to have shifted the Shiva and Buddhist practices to Tantrism at the end of the 13th century. This statue of the giant of Péjéng remains very famous because of its "miraculous" penis betraying a character, a demon, with gigantic powers. Snakes are wrapped around his ankles and wrists and a mask is affixed to his face. In fact, the giant has six penises, one of which we can see, one of which falls to the ground because of his vigorous dance, and four of which are waiting for the right moment of the dance before they emerge. The main penis is pierced by a hole resembling a nut, which is perhaps a tantric reference to sexual practices intended to increase female sexual pleasure. It is also a temple rich in archaeological artifacts, which help to understand historically the development of Hinduism in the region and in Indonesia more globally.
