MUSEUM ARKEOLOGI - ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM
Archaeological museum to discover various Balinese artifacts, from Paleolithic to Chinese ceramics.
Built in 1960, it was not opened to the public until 1974. It consists of 4 pavilions containing a number of Balinese objects ranging from the Paleolithic to Chinese ceramics of the seventeenth century. Some objects of Trunyan(Bali Aga) and tools, bronze bracelets. When you pass the candi bentar (split door) at the back of the museum, you come to another pavilion, where you will see stone sarcophagi, some of which come from the Bangli region and date back to 300 B.C. There are 2 types of sarcophagi; the first is between 100 and 120 cm long in which it seems that the bodies were kneeling or in the foetal position. Skeletons have been found in these positions with objects (weapons and ornaments). The second type is a larger sarcophagus that could have contained several bodies. The most beautiful is the turtle-shaped sarcophagus(Kura-Kura). All come from an ancient culture, prior to the arrival of Hinduism, since modern Balinese culture favors the cremation of bodies. It should be noted that the bronze used in the ornaments and jewelry is not a tin alloy but an alloy based on copper and lead. For young and old alike, this museum is extremely interesting to visit in order to better discover the history - as well as the prehistory! - and the past of the island. Most of the explanatory panels and exhibitions are translated into English. We strongly recommend it!
