PURI AGUNG KARANGASEM

A palace to visit in Amlapura, an interesting address for lovers of Balinese history, culture and architecture.
In 1937, the palace invited an American dancer, Katharane Mershon, who was studying Balinese ritual life. She was a privileged witness to the famous deification ceremony(maligia) of a king. A large entrance porch leads to the pavilion, on which numerous panels are carved. This pavilion is topped by a tiled roof. It is named Maskerdam, in memory of Karangasem's submission to Amsterdam at the beginning of the century, which allowed it to keep its independence or at least its autonomy after the defeat of the other Balinese kingdoms.
