CHUTE D'EAU DE GITGIT - GITGIT WATERFALL
Superb Gitgit waterfall, almost 40 m high, in a rural setting that may be of interest to botanists.
From Singaraja, the winding road winds its way up the mountain towards the Gitgit waterfall (pronounced "guitt-guitt", not "jitt-jitt" which means "ass" in Balinese, as in "jitt gedé": "big ass"), home to the famous Air Terjun waterfall, some ten kilometers away. A popular tourist destination, most buses stop here to drop off their groups. Nevertheless, the stop is not essential. The parking lot is on one side of the road, the entrance to the site on the other. You then have to walk 500 m up wide concrete steps, flanked by countless souvenir stalls. But the result is well worth the effort... The almost 40-metre-high waterfall is quite strong during the rainy season, making it impossible to bathe in the natural pool into which it flows. During the dry season, this option is available, although few Indonesians are inclined to do so. Many tourists take a dip between the rocks, offering themselves another perspective on the waterfall and a welcome refreshing moment. Despite the incessant demand for drinks, sarongs and other souvenirs, this rural spot can be of interest to botanists, who will be able to see some large-section bamboos, coffee trees, philodendrons and a few teak trees. There's no need for a guide - there's only one path to the waterfall, so you can't go wrong.
