A magnificent late Gothic cathedral that watches over Myeongdong like an older sister.

Myeongdong Cathedral is a superb non-Buddhist building in Korea. It represents the heart of the country's (relatively large) Catholic community. Built by Chinese masons to plans drawn up by French missionaries, it was completed in 1898 in pure Gothic style. The building played an important role in the democratization phase of the regime, as it was here that democracy activists gathered in the 1980s. Confessions and masses in English are offered at weekends.

Étonnant de trouver cette cathédrale à Seoul, qui plus est près d'une rue très animée. L'édifice est plutôt joli et l'intérieur est reposant.

Banal en France, le néo-gothique amuse à Séoul ; la cathédrale est entourée d'autres bâtiments et de divers petits jardins ; une double volée de marches parsemées de fleurs et d'arbustes permet de s'aérer, chose toujours appréciable au milieu du béton.

Toutes les églises ne valent pas le détour à Séoul... mais cette cathédrale oui. Elle est d’ailleurs dans le quartier Myeongdong où se multiplient les boutiques de vêtements, de produits de beauté et restaurants... Bref, au milieu de ce brouhaha de commerces effervescents, vous trouverez alors le calme de ce beau bâtiment chargé d’histoire. Intéressant.
