JEOLTUSAN
Kat-shaped church built in memory of Christian martyrs, with a small museum of Christianity, overlooking the river.
This large church in the shape of a kat, the Korean hat, was built in memory of the Christian martyrs (French missionaries and many Koreans). Nearly 20,000 Catholics were executed here in 1866. John Paul II canonized 103 Korean martyrs here in 1984. There's a view over the river and what was once the port of Mapo. There is also a small museum of Christianity in Korea. Next door is the foreigners' cemetery, with old tombstones incongruous in this area, one of which bears a poem in French.
