HWANGUDAN
This very beautiful sanctuary, transpires the Chinese inspiration and it is not without reminding the Temple of Heaven in Beijing.
This sanctuary dedicated to the spirit of heaven was erected in 1897 by King Gojong, who, having proclaimed himself emperor, could now make sacrifices to his spiritual progenitor. This symbolic gesture made Korea theoretically independent of China and Japan. The only remaining building is the Hwanggungu, a 3-storey octagonal pavilion reminiscent in form and function of Beijing's Temple of Heaven. Although smaller, it is strongly influenced by Chinese architecture. Today, the shrine is located within the grounds of the Westin Chosun hotel.
