JOGYESA TEMPLE
A large, modern temple founded in 1910, inviting visitors to take part in an ongoing ceremony and night-time illumination.
This large, modern temple was only founded in 1910. Its interest lies in its size, unique for a Buddhist temple in central Seoul. Under Joseon, temples were banned from the capital. Jogyesa is the Seoul center of the Jogye current, founded under Goryeo by the monk Jinul, the largest order of Korean Buddhism with over 1,500 temples in the country. Although this temple is new, it's not lacking in interest: it's always crowded and there's always a ceremony in progress. We recommend a visit at night, when the temple lights up.
