BONGWONSA
Temple built in 889 with a hall of 3,000 Buddhas, among the large wooden structures. Summer lotus culture festival.
This temple, classified as an intangible cultural heritage site by UNESCO in 2009, was founded in 889 on the site of today's Yonsei University, and was moved in 1749. It was destroyed during the Korean War and rebuilt immediately afterwards. In 1970, it became the center of the Taego sect. The 3,000 Buddha Hall, rebuilt in 1982, is one of the largest wooden structures in the country. The "Yeongsanjae" ritual takes place here every June 6, with vows for the reunification of the two Koreas. In summer, the Lotus Culture Festival is held here.
