DONGDAEMUN DESIGN PLAZA
Architectural UFO par excellence, this multi-cultural building is one of the symbols of a futuristic Seoul, a little did you see me.
Designed by Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid (whose credits include the Canton Opera House in China, the Olympic swimming pool in London and the National Museum of 21st Century Art in Rome), this magnificent building is the latest addition to the Korean capital. Completed in 2014, it is now a conference center, an exhibition venue (with no fewer than eight different halls), a shopping mall where many new designers present their products, and a vast concert hall. It's also here that the much-anticipated Seoul Fashion Week is held every March. The structure's special feature is its entirely green roof, where you can take a stroll. There's a strange feeling when you come face to face with this "silver spaceship" (the expression comes from the very serious American newspaper the New York Times), because at first it doesn't seem to blend in too well with the surrounding architecture. But this feeling soon fades away, to be replaced by the fascination provoked by this UFO. Whether you're a lover of new designers or even interested in new (often temporary) exhibitions of contemporary art from around the world, it's a must-see piece, now a signature of Seoul, which no longer hesitates to display it on its promotional campaigns. The DDP is clearly a must-see and won't leave you unmoved! The complex has several independent sections, so check the timetables for each one.
