BOSINGAK
Home to the municipal belfry, the bell was rung here in the mornings and evenings to announce the closing of Seoul's gates.
This is where the municipal belfry is located. In the past, the bell was rung 33 times at 4am and 28 times at 10pm to announce the closing of the city gates. The original bell, cast in 1468 for the Wongaksa Temple, was first placed in Namdaemun after the destruction of the temple, then in Myeongdong and finally here in 1619. It is now in the National Museum. The current bell was melted in 1985. The belfry was first built in 1395, then destroyed 4 times by fire. The last one was built in 1979.
