DOOR OF INDEPENDENCE (DONGNIMMUN)
Gate marking the end of the Sino-Japanese war, independence from China and the creation of the Daehancheguk Empire.
This gate, which resembles the triumphal arch of Paris, was erected from 1896 to 1898 to celebrate the end of the Sino-Japanese war but also independence from China and the creation of the Korean Empire, Daehancheguk. It was symbolically erected on the former site of the Yeong-eunmun gate, which was used to welcome the Chinese ambassadors who came to collect the tribute. Both were moved to this location in 1979. From the old door, there are still 2 pillars.
