SUNGNYEMUN OR NAMDAEMUN DOOR
Restored gate dating from 1398, described as the most beautiful of Seoul's gates with its two-storey wooden superstructure.
Korea's first national treasure, and a symbol of the city of Seoul. Built in 1398, the Namdaemun Gate was originally one of Seoul's four gates. At the time, it was described as the most beautiful and impressive, thanks to its two-storey wooden superstructure. It survived the worst when, in 2008, it was partially destroyed by an accidental fire. After five years' work, it has now been restored and surrounded by an attractive park.
