LEEUM, SAMSUNG MUSEUM OF ART
Museum with 3 distinct concepts, Museum 1 dedicated to traditional art, Museum 2 to contemporary art and Museum 3 to education.
The Samsung Cultural Foundation was established in 1965 and is now known (and recognized) as one of the most active companies in South Korea in the field of artistic patronage. After the opening in 1982 of its first museum, the Ho-Am Art museum, then in 1999 the Rodin gallery, here is its latest creation. Inaugurated in 2004, the Leeum Museum is simply a marvel (the name of the museum comes from Lee, the name of the company's president, and um corresponding to the last letters of the museum). Three world-renowned architects were chosen to illustrate 3 very different concepts: Museum 1, traditional art (the Swiss Mario Botta), Museum 2, contemporary art (the French Jean Nouvel) and Museum 3, education (the Dutch Rem Koolhaas). Museum 1 brings together a collection that extends from prehistory to the Joseon dynasty. It includes celadons and porcelains from the Buncheong and Joseon dynasties and 36 pieces have been classified as national treasures. Museum 2 has 3 floors, one dedicated exclusively to Korean contemporary art, another featuring important works by American and European artists, including Mark Rothko, Frank Stella, Donald Judd, Andy Warhol and Fontana..., as well as living artists such as Matthew Barney and Damien Hirst. Museum 3 has a collection of video works and a space reserved for children, which offers them various activities. A must visit for art lovers!
