Church in Copenhagen with a gigantic dome 31 meters in diameter, giving it the air of St. Peter's Basilica.

The construction of this church was envisaged as early as the foundation of the district, of which it was to be the highlight, but one thing led to another!

The first project was entrusted to Nikolai Eigtved, and the first stone was laid with great pomp by King Frederik V on September 30, 1749. The rococo style building was to be made of Norwegian marble, hence the strange name for a church. However, the architect died in 1754. His rival Lauritz de Thurah tried hard to succeed him, except that... a French architect, Nicolas-Henri Jardin had just arrived in Copenhagen, and he imported the new fashion of his country, the classicism. The king was seduced, so the Frenchman was asked to remodel the project. But... the king died in 1766. His successor Christian VII suffered from... mental disorders and was unable to reign. The construction was stopped by Johann Friedrich Struensee, the king's advisor.

As a result, the building remained in a state of draft for 150 years. Finally, the work was resumed under the aegis of the architect Ferdinand Meldahl, a great advocate of the historicist style, thanks to the financing of the banker Carl Frederik Tietgen. To the great relief of Copenhageners, it was finally inaugurated on August 19, 1894. And you can't miss it. Its gigantic dome of 31 meters in diameter dominates the open square in the axis of the Amalienborg Palace and gives it the air of St. Peter's Basilica, although Lutheran!
