NAVY CEMETERY (HOLMENS KIRKEGÅRD)
This cemetery, nestled in the heart of a highly residential area of Copenhagen, was originally created to bury destitute sailors.
More than a cemetery, a pleasant park nestled in the heart of a very residential area! This cemetery, the oldest in the capital, was originally created by a German architect, Henrik Rüse (in 1666) to bury destitute sailors. Since then, many admirals as well as several Danish Golden Age artists have been buried here: Theodor Philipsen or Johan Thomas Lundbye. At the back of the cemetery stands a beautiful wooden chapel, Esajas Kirke, a copy of a Norwegian wooden church.
