DANISH DESIGN MUSEUM (DESIGNMUSEUM DANMARK)
When you think of Copenhagen, you think of Danish design. This museum, entirely dedicated to creative genius, exhibits furniture icons.
Preceded by a courtyard opening onto Bredgade, this museum has taken over a beautiful rococo building. The collections, specializing in decorative arts and design, are built around the inner courtyard and span centuries and continents. If you don't have a lot of time, spend it in the Danish and European Design section.
After an introduction devoted to Art Nouveau and "industrial art", the great Danish designers are approached chronologically: functionalism illustrated by the simple, robust "people's furniture"(folke møbler), whose production was overseen by Børge Morgensen; a room devoted to Poul Henningsen, best known for his PH initials and lighting fixtures alone; another dedicated to Arne Jacobsen, an architect known for the furniture adapted to his main buildings.
Then comes the "Danish modernity" of the 1960s-1975s, always in search of pure, soft lines in reaction to the emergence of plastics and bright colors (Gunnar Aagaard Andersen, Vera Panker), before evolving towards "ecological" design where everything must be recyclable. We end with post-modernism, conceived as a revolt against the utilitarian sadness of triumphant functionalism.
A particular highlight is the gallery of chairs, a perfect illustration of the success story of Danish design and how to combine beauty with utility.
In short, a fascinating stroll through a century of everyday objects.
